Have you ever tried listening to the sea in the Eastern District?

What was once heard has vanished; what was once unheard has emerged. Strolling along the Eastern District coastline, let’s gather stories together—fast-forwarding or rewinding our relationship with the sea. Is it the hammering sounds from the old dockyard? The hawking calls by the seaside? Or the roar of traffic under the elevated bridge? We gaze at the sea, and the sea gazes back at our lives.

This is a creative experiment spanning over half a year in two phases, co-curated by Quarryside and Placebrewing in collaboration with community cultural worker Bobo and sound artist AK. Through story collection, sound gathering, and collaborative script creation, it culminates in the co-created works of community zines and a sound theatre piece. It invites all to wander and explore the east coast, listening to the sea thereafter woven from scattered memories.

Project Timeline:

March – May | Phase 1 | Story Collection and Field Recording
Follow cultural worker Bobo and sound artist AK along the east coast to conduct interviews and collect locals’ seaside stories, record ambient soundscapes.

July | The Community Zine Exhibition
Cultural worker Virginia, together with local participants, co-creates a zine from the collected stories of the Eastern District, weaving these community narratives through text and imagery for all to share.

August – September | Phase 2 | Sound Theatre Co-creation
Transform the gathered memories into theatrical narratives and sound installations.

October – November | Rehearsals and Performances
